BEE BOP STUDIO
Greetings!
My name is Bethany Seib, and I'm a multimedia artist whose work covers a wide range of mediums including printmaking, photography, video, and animation. During my studies in printmaking, I began exploring digital painting, printing, video editing, and animation. This led to freelance work in graphic design. Most recently, I've worked with The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and the Department of Engineering at Penn State University. I'm also teaching digital art courses online to Middle School and High School Students throughout the state of Pennsylvania. In my free time, I enjoy roller skating and hula-hooping. Occasionally, I incorporate that into my work.
My work explores illusion, perception, and human experience, particularly in relation to reveries and thrill-seeking behavior. I examine how perception allows fear to transform into bliss, and how humans use knowledge and control to evoke urgency and order. Influenced by Buddhist philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, I investigate survival instincts as proxies for physical danger, prompting primitive responses. The unresolved nature of my artwork encourages viewers to reflect on their perceptions. Neuroscientist David Eagleman’s research on time perception and memory supports my exploration of high-intensity experiences and their effects on the brain. I use chaotic experiences to uncover order and awareness, emphasizing how trauma can trigger survival instincts and transformation. Inspired by Buddhist thought, I embrace impermanence, using intuition to shape my evolving artistic process.
My creative process is deeply influenced by both historical and contemporary artistic movements, as well as scientific concepts like epigenetics, which explores how experiences shape gene expression. I integrate video collage, digital media, installation, and performance, drawing inspiration from artists like Tony Oursler and Albert Oehlen. By juxtaposing disorienting experiences, I aim to reframe perceptions of time, space, and memory. My work critiques mass media's manipulation by replacing horror with amusement, exposing the irony of thrill-seeking as escapism. Music also plays a vital role in my practice, harmonizing visual and auditory elements to reconstruct human experience. Through my art, I strive to create a shared energy that fosters connection, reflection, and inspiration. Ultimately, my work serves as a personal exploration of love, identity, morality, and humanity, allowing me to channel chaos into aesthetic and conceptual order.
